SALVINIA (Salvinia molesta)
Salvinia is a perennial, free-floating
aquatic plant native to Brazil. It has become established in Queensland after
escaping from aquariums. It forms dense mats that clog water bodies including
slow-moving fresh and brackish streams, or still water ponds. This affects
water quality, water flow, wildlife, irrigation areas and recreational
activities.

Salvinia leaves are bright green, oval in
shape and about 2 cm in width. Young leaves are flat on the water surface
whereas older leaves bend and become pairs along the stem. No flowers are
produced.

All species of salvinia are declared
plants in Queensland and cannot be sold or introduced into the state. People
carelessly emptying aquariums and ponds into waterways spread salvinia, and it
is suspected that some is actually farmed in natural waterways for harvest and
sale.
Do not allow salvinia to establish. Biological
control options (a weevil) are available from collection sites (contact your
local Land Protection Officer). Two herbicides are registered for the control
of salvinia in Queensland, caldec (AF 100®) and diquat (Reglone®). However
please read the label carefully before use of these products.
