SEQ Euthanasia of Livestock Course

  • University of Queensland Lawes, QLD, 4345 Australia (map)

The Dairy Australia 'Euthanasia of Livestock' short course is designed for dairy farmers, saleyard operators and other livestock handlers to help them deal with destruction of sick, injured and unsaleable cattle in a professional and humane manner. It has been delivered for a couple of years nationally and has been well received by farmers. Participant feedback has been overwhelmingly excellent.

100% of participants surveyed found the program useful with around 93% being able to implement what they learnt immediately after the program.

The course provides theory and practical skills to safely destroy calves, downer cows and other livestock by a variety of methods, with the emphasis on use of captive bolt devices. The methods taught are evidence-based and align with animal welfare legislation in all states of Australia. No animals are harmed during the workshop but all participants are expected to take part in practical exercises using appropriate props to demonstrate their competency.

The course is delivered only by Dairy Australia-trained veterinarians with formal training qualifications. It forms part of the unit of competency AHCLSK307A- "Euthanase Livestock" and is administered by the National Centre for Dairy Education Partners.

Dairy Australia has identified the course as an industry training priority as we consider that formal accreditation in this important aspect of animal care is important to allow participants to demonstrate their competency in industry best practices.
