Come along and join us for dinner and a panel discussion focussed around 'thinking outside' the square and innovative business and capital models and options. Operating a dairying business in the Subtropical Region presents its own set of unique opportunities and challenges. Sometimes the challenges appear to be more prevalent than the opportunities. Just getting through the 'daily grind' of keeping the business running smoothly can be a distraction from taking advantage of opportunities that might present themselves. Taking time to 'think outside the square' for solutions is sometimes a non-event...

About the night:

Barb Bishop will facilitate the discussion with the panelists to ensure we have a night filled with lots of great information and ideas and some fun and a few laughs too! Each of the panelists has their own story to tell, each with its own successes and challenges.

Our panelists for the night include:

Philip Hughes – Philip and his wife, Adele, are co-founders of Rangeland Quality Meats, a vertically integrated beef business singularly focused on providing quality literally from paddock to plate. The business was named Queensland's most innovative producer at the 2012 AgForce Red Meat Awards in Brisbane. Philip and Adele established Banchory Station in 1985 and then Rangeland Quality Meats in 2010 to meet end consumer needs. Banchory Station near Clermont is a 16,000 hectare breeding property with Brahman infused cows joined to Angus bulls where mainly black, flat-backed calves are raised on grass until they are about 250-300kg weaners when they are transported to Dulacca Downs and Heatherlea for backgrounding on grass for about six months. Philip will focus his discussion around separating the land investment from business investment and how to make it work for you.

Charlie Wilson - Charlie is a cotton/grains/organic beef producer from Central Qld. Charlie and Kaye Wilson purchased "Currimundi" at Emerald in 1981 and developed it to an efficient cotton operation encompassing 1,000ha. In 2004 they sold "Currimundi" and purchased "Karamarra", an undeveloped scrub block of 7,500ha on the Mackenzie River in Central Queensland, where they now irrigate over 600ha with 400ha set aside for cotton production, dryland crops, as well as running an organic cattle herd. Charlie has been involved in Industry issues from around 1990 where he was involved with the setting up of the Queensland Irrigators Council (QIC). In 1995 he was elected to the Cotton Australia Board and served as Chairman from 1999 to 2000. He also Chaired the Fitzroy Basin Association (FBA) from 2009 to 2013. This Association, in partnership with Agforce and the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry have been responsible for the rollout of Best Management Practice (BMP) in both grains and beef across Central Queensland in recent years.

Matthew Durack – In 2008 Matthew and his fellow colleague, Jeff Dodd, purchased the Stahmann Business in Australia. He now holds outright ownership of the farm and water assets of the group and majority ownership of the operating entity Stahmann Farms Enterprise Pty Ltd. Matthew stepped down as CEO in 2014 to focus on securing funding for increased pecan plantings in the Gwydir. He is now a Director of Durack Family Enterprises Pty Ltd and oversees his investments in the Stahmann Group, farming land, real estate and shares with the aim of building a sound portfolio of assets which support his family’s future aspirations as well as securing the sustainability of the land, businesses and, most importantly, people involved.
