Over 85 farmers and dairy industry services providers packed into the Toogoolawah Showgrounds for the QDO AGM and Industry Forum. The day included presentations from Qld Senator Barry O'Sullivan and Steve Laracy, Managing Director of Au Lait Australia who recently announced their intentions to build an infant milk formula plant at Wellcamp Airport.
Barry spoke passionately about the need for QDO and other Queensland agricultural industry bodies to ‘keep the rage’ and hold the Federal Government to account on promises including the ‘effects test’. Barry made it clear that he personally was behind the reforms and needed support from industry and the public to ensure the reforms were delivered as promised.
Members were very interested to hear Steve Laracy’s vision and plans for the proposed infant milk formula plant. As expected there was many questions and engagement from farmers about a potential to diversify the Queensland dairy industry. Although it was clear the project was at an early stage, there was still much for farmers to be cautiously excited about.
There was general discussion around QDO’s ongoing role with the ‘I Buy Branded Milk’ campaign. There was positive feedback from members on the direction of QDO and general optimism around the future of the industry despite the obvious challenges that continued to persist. Overall the day was a success with many members indicating they found the presentations interesting and useful.
